Optimal Sizing and Techno-Economic Analysis of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems—A Case Study of a Photovoltaic/Wind/Battery/Diesel System in Fanisau, Northern Nigeria

Nasser YIMEN

Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRESs) have been touted as an appropriate way for supplying electricity to remote and off-grid areas in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where rural electrification challenges are the most pronounced. This study proposes a two-step methodology for optimizing and analyzing a stand-alone photovoltaic/wind/battery/diesel hybrid system to meet the electricity needs of Fanisua, an off-grid and remote village of northern Nigeria. In the first step, the MATLAB environment was used to run simulations and optimize the system via the genetic algorithm. Then, techno-economic and emissions analysis was carried out in the second step to compare the proposed system to the existing traditional modes of rural electrification in sub-Saharan Africa, namely, the grid-extension and diesel generator. The break-even distance parameter was adopted in the comparison with grid-extension. Besides, the hypothetical project of replacing the diesel g...

A hybrid system, such as solar and wind, may be more successful than nonhybrid systems in accelerating the transition from conventional to renewable power sources. However, these new energy sources have several challenges, such as intermittency, storage capacity, and grid stability. This paper presents a complete analysis and study of a hybrid renewable-energy system (HRES) to convert a facility into a green building and reduce its dependence on conventional energy by generating clean energy with near-zero greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions. The proposed system aims to reduce the energy bill of a hotel in Petra, Jordan, by considering different sustainable energy resource configurations in a grid-connected hybrid renewable energy system (GHRES). The hybrid optimization of multiple energy resources (HOMER) grid software was utilized on the hybrid systems to study ways to improve their overall efficiency and mitigate GHG emissions from an economic perspective. The hybrid system components...

Technical and Economic Analysis of Solar PV/Diesel Generator Smart Hybrid Power Plant Using Different Battery Storage Technologies for SRM IST, Delhi-NCR Campus

ravi chaurasia

This paper presents atechnical and economic analysis of the proposed solar PV/diesel generator smart hybrid power plant for a part of SRM IST, Delhi-NCR campus. The analysis was performed using five battery storage technologies: lead-acid, lithium-ion, vanadium flow, zinc bromide and nickel-iron. The analysis also used the HOMER Pro software. The analysis was conducted to assess performance parameters such as initial cost, simple payback period, return on investment, energy produced, renewable penetration and emission of air pollutants. The optimal solution was obtained as SPP(200 kW)/DG(82 kW)/ZB(2000 kWh), with cycle charging dispatch strategy. The initial cost of this configuration is estimated to be USD163,445, and the operating cost is USD534 per year. The net present cost is estimated to be USD170,348, and the estimated cost of energy with this configuration has been obtained as USD0.090 per kWh. It is estimated that with this optimal solution, the diesel generator may consume...

Optimal Design and Mathematical Modeling of Hybrid Solar PV–Biogas Generator with Energy Storage Power Generation System in Multi-Objective Function Cases

Prof. Armand Fopah Lele

This study demonstrates how to use grid-connected hybrid PV and biogas energy with a SMES-PHES storage system in a nation with frequent grid outages. The primary goal of this work is to enhance the HRES’s capacity to favorably influence the HRES’s economic viability, reliability, and environmental impact. The net present cost (NPC), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and the likelihood of a power outage are among the variables that are examined. A mixed solution involves using a variety of methodologies to compromise aspects of the economy, reliability, and the environment. Metaheuristic optimization techniques such as non-dominated sorting whale optimization algorithm (NSWOA), multi-objective grey wolf optimization (MOGWO), and multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) are used to find the best size for hybrid systems based on evaluation parameters for financial stability, reliability, and GHG emissions and have been evaluated using MATLAB. A thorough comparison between NSWO...

Optimization of On-Grid Hybrid Renewable Energy System: A Case Study on Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Mohsin Shahzad

Expansion of modern power systems due to increasing energy demands face the challenges of grid reinforcement cost, size and complexity, transmission losses, and environmental factors. Placement of renewable energy sources (RES) based generation systems addresses these challenges. However, the size and placement location of RES-based system require optimization of installation and operational cost with better return on investment and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. This paper presents an optimized solution for RES-based generation system to be installed with the existing power system of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) region that is facing power shortfall and load shedding. The weather and climate data from NASA and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have been used and various models of on-grid hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) are compared to highlight their techno-economic benefits. An optimal hybrid photovoltaic, wind, and hydroelectric energy-based generation sys...

A large number of populations of the world live in rural or remote areas those are geographically isolated. Power supply and uninterrupted fuel transportation to produce electrical power for these areas poses a great challenge. Using renewable energy in off grid hybrid energy system might be a pathway to solve this problem. Malaysia is a hilly land with the gift of renewable energy resources such as solar energy, wind energy, wave energy, tidal energy, biomass etc. There is a possibility to utilize these renewable resources to produce electrical power and to limit the dependency on the fossil fuel. In this perspective, a research is carried out to analyze the performance of three different hybrid renewable energy systems suitable for different territories of Malaysia. Three different hybrid renewable energy systems are off-grid PV-diesel hybrid energy system, off-grid wind-diesel hybrid energy system and off-grid PV-wind-diesel-battery hybrid energy system. The performance analysis ...

Design and Optimization of a Grid-Connected Solar Energy System: Study in Iraq

Ali Aziz Al

Hybrid energy systems (HESs) consisting of both conventional and renewable energy sources can help to drastically reduce fossil fuel utilization and greenhouse gas emissions. The optimal design of HESs requires a suitable control strategy to realize the design, technical, economic, and environmental objectives. The aim of this study is to investigate the optimum design of a grid-connected PV/battery HES that can address the load requirements of a residential house in Iraq. The MATLAB Link in the HOMER software was used to develop a new dispatch strategy that predicts the upcoming solar production and electricity demand. A comparison of the modified strategy with the default strategies, including load following and cycle charging in HOMER, is carried out by considering the techno-economic and environmental perspectives. According to optimization studies, the modified strategy results in the best performance with the least net present cost (USD 33,747), unmet load (87 kWh/year), grid ...

Md Emdadul Hoque

The aims of this paper are to develop hybrid energy systems considering biomass energy sources as well as a framework and optimal configuration of hybrid systems of energy for a southern sub-urban area of Bhola district in Bangladesh, named Kukri Mukri island, and analyse the feasibility of the techno-economic prospects of these systems. In this work, electrification for the rural area is analysed for different configurations of the hybrid systems. The estimation of available resources with optimal sizing and analysis of techno-economic aspects is done through HOMER Pro software to satisfy the demand of peak load. Different configurations of hybrid energy systems, including PV/diesel, PV/wind, PV/diesel/wind, PV/wind/diesel/biomass, and wind/diesel, are analysed and compared through optimization of different energy sources in HOMER. The size of the system and components are optimized and designed depending on the net present cost (NPC) and the levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Due to...
