Image: ParamountThis one depends on how long you’ve been away from Discovery, really, but I’m sure there’s someone out there intrigued by the final season of a Star Trek show who’s maybe either not watched since the early days or wants to jump in on the last leg. So, if that’s you… well, go watch the rest of the show first. It has its moments.But if you insist: Discovery has not been the pre-original-Trek show it started out as for a long while now. At the end of season two, the crew and the Discovery itself were flung far, far into the future in order to close the loop on a potential galaxy-ending threat that meant they could never return to their original timeline in the 23rd century. Ever since, they have been at the furthest point a Star Trek show has ever consistently gone to, even beyond the far future glimpsed in Enterprise’s Temporal Cold War storyline: the 32nd century.Things are, to be clear, not 100% great at this moment in time, state of the galaxy-wise. Before Discovery showed up, the Federation’s myriad member worlds and Starfleet had been completely torn apart by a cataclysmic event called “The Burn,” the simultaneous detonation of dilithium across known space which rendered warp travel—and thus the existence of interstellar society as it had existed for over a thousand years—extremely difficult. Discovery helped solve that problem, slowly but surely allowing Starfleet to rebuild, but not before it faced another cataclysmic threat called the Dark Matter Anomaly, or DMA, a not-so-random “random” gravitational event that kept showing up and destroying entire worlds in storms of debris and chaos. Turns out the DMA was actually the product of an extra-galactic race known only as the Ten-C, which, once again, Discovery helped solve the problem with after successfully making First Contact with the beings. New Post: NASA photos reveal serious damage to its Mars helicopter - https://lnkd.in/gjtEsqkN - After taking 72 flights into the Martian sky, NASA's Mars helicopter won't fly again. The craft's own images show why. Ingenuity — the first craft to ever make a powered, controlled flight on another planet — recently suffered significant damage to some of its four-foot-long rotors, which are essential for lifting the helicopter into the air. The pictures below, taken by a navigation camera affixed to Ingenuity's toaster-sized fuselage, show several broken tips. The sun cast the broken rotors' shadows onto the desert surface. SEE ALSO: NASA's car-sized rover spots strong evidence of gushing water on Mars These rotors can't fly damaged. Compared to Earth, the Martian atmosphere is quite thin. Its density is about one percent of Earth's, making it difficult to generate the lift needed for flight. To take to the air, Ingenuity spun its rotor blades at a blazing 2,400 revolutions every minute. It flew distances as far as 2,315 feet. But as you can see, controlled flight isn't possible anymore. The extraterrestrial chopper served as a "scout" for the space agency's Perseverance rover, as the two Martian robots sleuthed for places that might have preserved signs of past primitive life on the dry desert surface. This could mean telltale pieces of genetic material, or parts of a degraded cell.No evidence of life has been found — but the robots did identify places where primitive life could have once thrived, like in moist sediments along lakeshores and Martian rivers. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds did something amazing that it’s core audience wouldn’t recognize. Spoilers ahead!This season saw Star Trek travel uncharted territory for the franchise: a musical. With so many singers in the cast, it would have been foolish of them not to, especially when one of those singers is Grammy Award winner Celia Rose Gooding.Gooding plays the iconic Nyota Uhura as a young ensign on the Enterprise. Nichelle Nichols made waves in the 60s playing this character as a Black woman playing a senior officer alongside a mostly white cast. Gooding, a Black nonbinary person, takes on the role for a new audience, still making waves for Black queers, though hardly noticeable to mainstream media.A note: I use she/her pronouns to refer to Uhura. Gooding’s pronouns are they/them.If you didn’t know, Nichelle Nichols was to leave Star Trek after the first season to star in Porgy & Bess on Broadway until a certain civil rights leader (MLK) convinced her to stay. Gooding, already a Broadway star at 23, gives a stellar performance in “Subspace Rhapsody,” with the show-stopping number “Keep Us Connected.” The song is about Uhura’s role as the communications officer in solving the problem that’s causing the crew to break into song at key emotional moments. It’s also about Black Superwoman Syndrome and the expectation of Black queer resiliency in the workplace.In the song, we learn more of Uhura’s backstory. Tragedy and loss painting the picture of this character in ways that would resonate with many Black and queer folks today. Despite the weight of tragedy, Uhura is expected to rise above and perform while the rest of the crew breaks down.It’s Uhura’s job to save them all even though she is also hurting. And she does. She rises above and saves them with uncanny cleverness and efficiency. There’s no one there to hold her pain as she does it. She does it alone and, at this point, expects this loneliness.It’s a heartbreaking song that hits a workplace culture problem on the nose. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/efacS7rF. Though only about half of all lunar landing attempts have succeeded without crashing, space fans will likely get many spectacular Earth and moon photos along the way, like the latest one beamed back by Japan: Its uncrewed SLIM mission, short for Smart Lander for Investigating the Moon, captured a rare snapshot of Earth looming over the moon, though you might have to squint to see it. Japan, illuminated at dawn, is circled on Earth in the picture."When the SLIM team first saw this image, they wondered… what is that white dot under the Earth?!" said JAXA, NASA's Japanese counterpart, on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Dec. 20. That will put it a few weeks ahead of U.S.-based Astrobotic Technologies' moon landing effort, which will try to bring five NASA instruments to the surface, among other payloads. The SLIM mission follows private Japanese company ispace's failed lunar landing in April. The reason the spacecraft is seen traveling farther from the moon in this navigation camera image is a result of SLIM's special fuel-saving trajectory, said Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "With a tiny spritz of the rocket thruster, you can fall back toward the moon on a path that will pass the moon relatively slowly, allowing you to land easily," he said. "The downside is that it takes several months instead of a few days to get there from Earth." William a expert on Philco Company said, the Predicta was not developed for the Holiday Inn chain in 58! Do to poor design and Philcos financial problems the Predicta was discontued in 65 when Ford bought out the company. The balance of unsold units were then sold to Holiday Inn. The Club Philco Predicta administrator Blake said this model Debutante was from the 1960 and was the model that was very much created for consumer sales. it is it was only later sold in masse to the Holiday Inn in 1965 when Ford bought out the company as a marriage of low cost convenience and marketing schtick.
