Super Bowl's Harrison Butker Wore Brown Scapular While Kicking Winning Field Goal (2024)

The Kansas City Chiefs won their third Super Bowl on Feb. 12, 2023 after kicker Harrison Butker scored their winning field goal.

In recently surfaced photos from the historic game, viewers caught Butker wearing Our Lady’s Brown Scapular.

The 27-year-old NFL player is an outspoken practicing Catholic who loves the Latin Mass. He has also expressed his love for the Blessed Mother in Catholic media interviews.

Countless social media users commented on the photo after several accounts published it.

One user said, “Faith requires courage. So heartening to see his courage.”

Another user said, “My young child noticed that and was thrilled our favorite devotion got a call out during the biggest moment of the game.”

This user also tweeted, “I hope Harrison Butker appreciates what a role model he is for little Catholic kids everywhere. Mine smile real big every time they see one of those pictures of him getting a blessing or wearing his scapular.”

Butker’s conversion

While playing football at Georgia Tech, Butker reverted to the Catholic faith after falling away from the Church. He credits the sacrament of confession to his “biggest leap of faith” that ultimately changed his life.

“The biggest leap of faith for me was finally going to the sacrament of confession. That is really what changed me,” he told EWTN in 2019. “When I left that confessional– that is what really made me feel different…that’s when I changed my life around.”

“I saw the fruit from it–the fruit from living a holy and grace-filled life,” he adds, saying breaking those habitual sins was a difficult adjustment.

“That’s the real struggle of living a pure and saintly life. Striving to be a saint. That’s what it is. We’re all called to holiness. We’re all called to become saints.”

Following his first Super Bowl win in 2020, Butker again sat down with EWTN’s Colm Flynn for an interview. He said his faith keeps him grounded when in the public spotlight.

“My faith is the most important thing to me. From there, it goes to being a great husband and a great father, and then I look to football and trying to be the best football player I can be,” he said.

“It definitely helps keep perspective on the fact that God’s got me in this arena playing football for a reason. He wants to use my platform for good. But at the end of the day, he can take that away from me whenever he wants to.”
