Wife wanted to go to Rural King to pick up some flowers and while I was in there I noticed a huge display of Stihl products, the whole line from garden tillers to chainsaws and everything in between. Really impressive the way they did it, kinda stood out from everything else. Some of the higher end saws weren't quite as expensive as I thought they'd be.

We have a CAL RANCH store. Sounds more or less like the store you mentioned.
They have a good display and quite a few models on hand, from homeowner to pro use. They also have 10% off everything in the store sales quite often.
I bought my FS-250R from them.

Yep, rural kings around here (Mount Carmel, Evansville) have them, they have for at least 10 =12 years, did you go to one in Vincennes? I see you're only about 40 miles from me.

Yes, it was Vincennes. They never carried Stihl products before and I had been told they weren't supposed to sell Stihl in stores, only at dealers. I suppose Rural King can't be called a "big box store" like Home Depot but it's pretty close to that. They used to (and still do) carry Echo, Poulan and Husqvarna chainsaws. I'm still getting over the looks of that display! It really stood out!

I didn't know Vincennes had them, "The Champ" must be reeling about this. If John Deere shops can sell them, I guess wal-mart is next. The Rural King in Mt Carmel usually has lower prices on their stihls and they will bicker around on prices. Maybe they are culls?

I will glance at the display as I walk by. Then drive to the family run Stihl/Husky dealer 5 miles down the road.

I had a bad experience at Rural King last year while buying a 261. The saw was sold as new but was actually used.
When I got the saw home & opened the gas cap there was still remnants of gas in the tank, old stale gas.

I'll probably never buy a new Stihl, I usually buy basket case saws and put them together. Sometimes I'd save money by just buying a new one though..

I heard that Stihl won't let you have a new one in a box, so maybe that's out..

I wonder what Stihls proprietaries are when it comes to dealers, can anybody throw up a shingle?
I have been corrected, Evansville just started selling them last year, but I am positive Mt Carmel has had them since 2003.
I pretty well consider RK a big box store myself.

Me too, our closest Rural King is about as big as some Home Depot stores. I usually roam the store when I'm there because wife looks at clothes and I look at equipment..

It is my understanding that Stihl usurped their own contractual agreement with their independent dealers by selling product through "regional" retailers. I was told this by my local Stihl dealer, and two former Stihl dealers here in Utah.
Also, as for CAL Ranch, they don't have an actual Stihl Tech on site, but they claim to have one at the store in the Salt Lake valley. So if you purchase a Stihl at their store in Cedar City, and have a problem, the service center is only a "mere" four hours away. Good luck with that.

Yeah, the CAL RANCH here doesn't have a service tech or a service dept. in the store. I was talking to an employee at a local ACE Hardware store, who knew a couple of the guys that work at CAL RANCH and prepare all the Stihl equip. for sale.
According to the ACE guy, the CAL RANCH guys never show at Stihl tech schools as mandated by Stihl. He doesn't know how they get away with it and are still able to sell Stihl equip.

Rural King opened here last fall, sells Stihl. It's really tough on established local dealers. I won't deal with RK on anything my dealer carries. My dealers been way too good to me over the years to walk away.

Rural King in Vincennes used to have a tech on site, last I checked. He worked on everything, mowers, saws, tillers, etc. nice fellow.
