The below article by Rand Fishkin is simply a must read. about the often unseen unglamourous side of startups in the Internet industry.The harsh reality is that if Rand Fishkin had hired a different CEO than Tara....the world of SEO and the entire business model, revenue and balance of power today at Google might be distributed in a totally different manner.Billions of dollars of revenue had the potential to shift away from Google because anyone that understands business and Google understands that the management of a company's Google assets is more valuable than the assets themselves. As a former thought leader and speaker on c-level strategic issues at Search Engine Strategies I have to say that the potential for large chunks of revenue to have shifted from Google to Moz was in my mind "very doable" for the decade prior to his departure. To me, part of what made Moz successful ironically prevented the airtime of different pathways and possibilities. Taking weeks to respond to one days worth of messages is both a blessing and a curse. Without that community Moz was never Moz. But that community tugged at Rand Fishkin's and 🌎 Gillian Muessig - Mastersfund™'s pantleg for time and attention so intensely that free time to think and manage the company differently - the ability to rethink and pivot the business model to get to the next phase appeared to be stifled and often crowded out.I admire Rand for sharing this post (I only wish that Bill Slawski had lived to see it), you can feel the scars coming through the words as you read them, as he didn't have to. Powerful read. My open question to Rand is if you made a list of what you would have done differently, what would that look like? Maybe that is another post. FYI: Barry Schwartz
